Creative IQ is committed to ensuring the health, safety, and welfare of all children, staff, volunteers, and visitors. This policy outlines how we create safe environments and comply with statutory duties.
Aims:
- Maintain safe spaces for STEM learning.
- Promote safe working for all.
- Provide training and support for staff.
- Ensure emergency and first aid systems are in place.
- Continuously assess risks and review protocols.
Legal Framework:
1) This policy complies with:
- Health and Safety at Work Act 1974
- Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999
- COSHH Regulations 2002
- RIDDOR 2013
- Fire Safety Order 2005
- Work at Height Regulations 2005
- Children Acts 1989 & 2004
- EYFS Framework (where applicable)
2) Responsibilities:
- The Health & Safety Lead (Denver) is responsible for oversight and policy reviews
- Staff must follow safety procedures, report hazards, and attend training.
- Parents and children must follow safety rules.
3) Risk Assessment:
- Conducted for all activities, new tools, trips, and any identified hazard
- Reviewed annually or after incidents.
4) First Aid & Medical:
- A trained first aider is present at every session.
- Injuries are recorded and parents informed the same day.
- Medication is managed per parental consent.
5) Fire Safety:
- Drills held termly.
- Staff trained on evacuation, fire exits, and emergency planning.
6) COSHH:
- All substances are risk assessed before use.
- Safety data sheets stored on site.
- PPE and adult supervision provided as needed.
7) Equipment Safety:
- All tools are age-appropriate, regularly checked, and supervised.
8) Lone Working & Manual Handling:
- Lone working is discouraged. Staff check in when required.
- Lifting is done safely using trolleys or training.
9) Trips and Off-site Events:
- Risk assessments and ratios maintained.
- First aid cover and emergency contacts are always carried.
10) Hygiene & Infection Control:
- Handwashing encouraged.
- Equipment is cleaned regularly.
- Ill staff/children must stay home.
11) Reporting:
- Accidents, incidents, and near misses are logged.
- Trends reviewed to prevent recurrence.
12) Training:
- Staff complete health and safety induction and annual refreshers.
13) Monitoring:
- Annual audits conducted and feedback used to improve practices.
